Why Earn a Degree?
Earning an educational degree is one of the best life-changing decisions a person can make. Of course, when someone earns a degree, he or she becomes eligible for more prestigious job positions and higher pay. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in 2004 that full-time workers age 25 and over who had not earned a high school diploma had median weekly earnings of $396. High school graduates had median weekly earnings of $562. For college graduates, the median figure was $996/week.
Education offers benefits beyond additional income. It helps to boost self-confidence. It dispels boredom by helping people to “get out of a rut” and try something new. Plus, since people who study are exposed to new information and different ways of thinking, they may become more interesting conversationalists and thereby enhance their personal and professional relationships. Parents with more formal education may also be better prepared to educate their children and help them with schoolwork. Furthering one’s education can enhance every area of life.
